At today's wool sales I<*,ooo bales were catalogued. The tone of the market remains quiet. The Merchant Shipping and Under- ! writers’ Association report the arrival I of the Duchess of Argyle, from Lyttel- [ ton (left June 2nd) ; Firth of Forth, I from Lyttelton ("left June 19th); and Mataura, from Port Chalmers (left Jane 12 th). Sept. 24r. A serious railway accident has occurred in a tunnel near New York. Two trains were telescoped, and 12 persons were killed and a large number weunded. Sept. 25. In consequence of the prevalence of piracy in the Chinese Seas, the English Admiralty is arming a number of merchant cruisers. Six are being prepared at Bombay aud six at Hong Kong. The railway bridge over the Drive, at Essek, a town at the junction of the Drave and Danube., sank gradually as . the train passed over it. The coupling of the carriages gave way, and the rear of the train consequently was saved. Thirty soldiers were drowned. Jay Gould has succeeded in obtaining control over the New York Associated Press. Tiie fact has caus*d a considerable sensation in commercial and political circles.
