The Temuka Leader THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1882. WOMEN’S RIGHTS.

A few days ago a telegram from Auckland informed us that a meeting of ladies had been held there for the purpose of consideiing the provisions of a certain statute, which may as well not be even mentioned. Previously we learned from the same source that a Mrs Walker disturbed a meeting held in the same place by Mrs Ilampaon for religious purposes with a dessertation on the same subject. Whowever Mrs Walker may be, we must say indeed that we d« not tnink that she is a very desirable colonist. She must certainly be a woman lost to all sense of propriety or modesty to make such a matter the subject of her discourse, and though we learn that she has managed to get up a meeting of ladies to advocate the cause she has espoused, we cannot believe that these ladies occupy a respectable position in society. The statute under discussion inflicts no hardship on respectable women, and respectable women ought to have nothing to say about it. It can never harm them. We hope therefore, that this Mrs W alker will find but few sympathisers in New Zealand, and that her mission will be a fruitless one. W# daresay we next shall hear of her advocating women’s rights if she can possibly acquire any power over her audiences. We would much rather have heard that she h;.d takennp the women’s rights question, than the one she has already been advocating, although indeed wc should be very sorry to see the women of tins colony espousing the cause in the same way that the women of America have done. The women of America made themselves the laughing stock of (he world by the wild and ridiculous manner in which they took up this subject, and it is much to be hoped that similar nonsense will not be indulge.! in in New Zealand.
