ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Sept. 19,
The cargo of frozen mutton ex steamship Garonne has been placed in the market in splendid condition. It realised an average of G-|d per lb at auction. From Lima enquiries are being made in London as to the cost of a monthly supply et 400 tons of Australian frozen bee.f delivered at Callao.
The City of Glasgow Bank liquidators have now paid all creditors in full, with the exception of the Scottish banks and there is a probability of there beinga substantial surplus.
The Marquis of Lome was warned prior to his embarkation in. H.M.S. Ccmus at San Francisco, that a flat torpedo was on board to explode during the voyage to British Columbia, A thorough search was made, but nothing was discovered ■ Hanlon refuses to row Wallace Ross before next June. When the Asia foundered in Lake Ontario the passengers took to the boats, but these were so overcrowded that they speedily swamped, and only one man and one woman were saved.
The cotton crop in America is stated to be 40 per cent below the usual average. At to-day’s wool auction 8600 bales were offered. The market was steady, but the demand was not active. Consols have advanced to IGO^-. Sept. 20.
The weather on the Alps from St. Gothard through the Tyrol has been lately of a most unusually severe nature, and many dangerous landslips hav* occurred. The river Drava has been flooded, and its overflow has devastated the country through which it flows into the Danube.
A serious landslip has blocked the St. Gothard Channel.
At to-day’s wool auction 10,100 bales were offered. Prices were again steady, but the demand was not active. The railway approaches to Moscow arc guarded by 30,000 troops. All telegraphic and railway communication with Moscow lias been absolutely suspended. The date fixed for the Czar’s coronation is kept absolutely secret. St. Petersburg, Sept. 19. The Czar has started for Moscow for his coronation. An offensive and defensive alliance was concluded to-day between the Russian and Montenegrin Governments. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sydney, Sept. 20. The Legislative Assembly last night adopted an Address to the Queen on the success of the British army in Egypt. Malting barley is in fair demand at 5s Id to 5s scl, inferior descriptions unsaleable ; shipping wheat 6s 8d to 6s lOd, quotations nominal only ; New Zealand oats are quoted at 4s to 4s 2d for feeding, and 4s 2d to 4s and for milling sorts. O’Farrell, who attempted to assassinate Archbishop Gould by shooting him with a revolver on the 20th u!t., and who was committed for trial on the 2nd inst., was brought up at the Supreme Court to-day, and was found guilty on a charge of unlawfully wounding. He was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment. Melbourne, Sept. 21. The Government have called upon Dr Barker to resign his appointment on the Victorian Medical Board., Dr Barker has given categorical denial to the statement that he attempted to procure an abortion in the case of the late Mrs Stein, and demands a full enquiry into the charge.
