LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Fkiiuy'r Sitting. The Land Bill, the Rating Bill, the Road Boards Bill, the Special Powers and Contracts Bill, and the District Railways Bill worn all passed. The Crown and Native Lands Rating Bill was read a second time. 'Lie Loan Bill was read a first time. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Several questions having been answered, am! s« veral small Bills dealt with, the motion for going into Committee on the Public Works Estimates was brought forward. Mr Montgomery protested against the House being asked to pass one and three quarters millions of money that evening without having any previous know ! e<:ge of what it was for. It was most unfair to p?ess the Estimates through that evening without giving members any time to study them. Sir John Li all agreed with Mr Montgomery, as also did Mr Swanson and Mr Petrie. Major Atkinson said that Government was consuming the wishes of the majority of members, who wanted to get away, and he insisted on that evening, After some further discussion it was decided to go on with the estimates on a division of 3-1 to 32. On the motion that the Speaker leave the chair, Mr Moss showed that though Government had promised to spend, only at the rate of £1,000,000 a y<;ar they had already promised to spend. £1,800,000 next year. In Committee of Supply the following votes on the public works were passed : Public Works Department, L 1284 ; railways, L903.G9G ; surveys of new lines, L 12,500. Roads and Bridges— Auckland, L 77,473 ; Hawkes Bay L 8552 : Wellington, L 28,316 ; Taranaki, L 15,420 ; Nelson, Ls9,eiG ; Marlborough, L 33,100 ; Westland, L 6039 ; Ilokitika-Christchurch Road, L13,5)0 ; Canterbury, L 10,500 ; Otago, L 26,042 ; Native Reserves, L 7362. Roads to open land before sale—Auckland, L 67,257 ; T&ranaki, L 10,075; Hawkes Bay, L 12,129; Wellington, L 31,143 ; Nelson, L 23,382 ; Mailborougb, L 5243 ; Canterbury, L25/29G ; Westland, L 22,302 ; Otago, L44,3U9 ; Southland, L 15,593. This completed the Public Works Estimates. Progress was reported at 5 a.m., and the House adjourned till 2.30 p.m, on Saturday. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Saturday's Sitting. The Loan Bills were introduced by the Premier. Sir George Whitmore moved that they bo read that day six months, and after a long discussion, in which many of the members disapproved of further borrowing, a division was taken on the North Island Special Loan, resulting in 24 voting Coram! 9 against.
