TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of' the above Board was held last Tuesday. Prssent—Mr John Talbot \ (Chairman), B. A. Barker, J. Austin, J. Paterson, and Rnaor. , MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, CORRESPONDENCE. t The i tollowing correspondence was read :-t ' From R. Ward, asking for timber to build a i dray-bridge over a drain on the lower swamp road. The 'Surveyor was instructed to make inquiries into the matter and if reasonable allow the required timber. I?rom Mr W. Poatlethwaite, M.H.R., In refereace to the suggestions made by the Board in the new Rating Act, and stating that soma of them would be adopted. From Mr Alfred Cox, enclosing a cheque for £242 16s 3d" being his share of the money due for work done in connection with the Orari reserves and freehold lands. From the County Council enclosing n cheque for £221 4s Oil, being the amount of account in connection with the Opibi Bridge. From the Secretary to the Christchurch Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, enclosing statement of accounts for Juno. From Mr J. T, M. Hay hurst stating that he was willing to sell the land necessary for making the rosd to Mr F. H. Barker’s house at the rate of £25. SANITARY. Mr Talbot called attention to the rub--bish being thrown near the road at - the river, and on the motion of Mr Ensor -it was resolved—“ That notice be inserted in the papers that no rubbish will in future be allowed to be deposited on the -Temuka riverbed within five chains of the public road, and only on the south side of the road; and that any person so depositing rubbish after this date will be prosecuted.’’ The Chairman also called attention to the state of roads with gorse, and it
wus if - notice . be - given that all gorse must be cleared off the t reeds before the first of October next, or proceedings will be taken ; and that the surveyor ssrve the required legal notices without delay.” TH»’ rOUKDKKKPSR’s PIRPIIXITIBS. ’Mr John Larson, waited on the I Board td laskltbeir .advice iwith regard Ito pigs impounded by him from Waitoh|. The pigs, if kept in the pound up to the time required by law before they could be sold, would not, bring as much money as would pay for them. He therefore-asked the Board whether the could sell ■ them before any further expenses had been incurred. He had been told that the pigs belonged to Mr M. Wight man, but he denied the ownership of them, probably because they were not worth releasing. They had been impounded by Mr Wright. The Board, after consulting the Impounding Ordinance, came to the conclusion that they had no power to authorise the pouhdkelper jto ielljlheni,; but at! the. same time they did not believe that he would be running any great risk in doing so, and i therefore they would advise him to sell as soon as he liked. FINANCIAL POSITION, Tho Chairman stated that.the financial position of the Board was : Current account, £1205 13s 10; fixed deposits, £6OOO. The amount to the credit of the current account tegether with rates would carry them to the end of the year, so there would be no necessity far drawing on their fixed deposits. RATES. Mr Lewis, in reply to the Chairman, said he had received about £2OO rates, and was instructed to advertise that unless rates were paid, ratepayers would be sued for their recovery. XANQIXATA FORDS. MrJ, Stengar, contractor for the Bangi tata, fords, waited upon the Board to explain that owing to the '/prevalence of north-west windsj extra trouble had been imposed upon him, and asking the Board to allow him £5 extra. ; Mr Stengar was informed that if the contract was faithfully carried eut, the £5 would, be laid the expiry of his contract. CLERICAL ASSISTANCE On the motion of Mr Ensor, seconded by Mr Barker, it was resolved —“That in consequence of the clerical work of the Boardlbeing in arrears through the recent disablement of the Surveyor, the Chairman be empowered®.to appoint a clerk at the sum of £1 per week. ” surveyor’s report. The following report waa read and considered ; “ Sir, —I have examined the river, ancroachments near* section 10380, and would suggest that a wire fence to put at a distance of about four chains above the place complained of. The fence would require to be about six chains long, and would probably cost about £SO. (The question wss deferred for the present.) According to instructions, I recommend icr .shingling the following roads : The main road from the Spur Hut road westward for a distance ef about 40 chains; Grant’s .road for .about 140 chains ; Palmsr’s road for about 40 chains; Ohapi; from the proposed new road nsar Mr Barker’s to the Upper Swamp road, about 145' ‘ chains. / Tenders w#re or.dered.to be called, but the price of shingle must not exceed 3d per yard. ■ TENDERS. ' ■ ’ Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows : —Contract No. 21—Latter Bros,, £96 10a ; F” MuUoy, £IOO (accepted) ; Martin Dunn, £97 7s. Contract No. 22—Martin Dunn, £2B (accepted). Contract.,No. 23—Martin Dunn, lls 9d per chain. (accepted): 'Contract 5 No. 24—G Davis, 2s per- chain/; T Davis, 2s per chain ; T Manning, 2s 8d per chain. No tender was accepted. Contract No. 25 F Mulloy, £l6B 15s. Defeired. The Board then adjourned.
