PARLIAMENTARY NEWS.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Monday’s Sitting. The Wellington Harbor Board and Corporation Land Act 1880 Amendment Bill was passed. Several Bills were advanced a stage. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, Colonel Trimble brought up the report of the Native Affairs Committee on the petition of Mr Taiaroa and others, and a good deal of discussion took place thereon, until Mr Macfarlane pointed out that the Select Committee was sitting without authority of the House. Major Atkinson moved that authority be not given, and on the motion being put it was lost by 40 to 22. The motion that the report lie on the table was carried by 46 to 14. The Brogdeu claims came up f:r discussion and were adjourned till next day. Ihe House then went into Committee on the Road Boards Bill and it passed with soma slight amendments. The House went into Committee on the Counties Act Amendment Bill, and continued discussing it till 1.25 a.m. when the House rose. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Tuesday’s Sitting. A short discussion arose as to what Bills the Government proposed to carry, and what were to be sacrificed. Dr Pollen said he never knew Government business before to have fallen so much in arrears.
The Hon the Premier said he was taken somewhat by surprise as to the Government Bills. All he could say was he proposed to sit to-night until the Order Paper was gone through, but what Bills would pass through the House of Representatives he could not say. They might pass only one, or the whole lot. He was not aware th&t it was the intention of the Government to prorogue on Saturday, but he saw no difficulty in the prorogation taking place next week. For himself, he had no objection to stay a fortnight, or even three weeks.
It was agreed to give Government Bills precedence. In reference to the Strangers’ Room Mr Nurse said he had occasion to wait for a stranger in that room and he found it full of tobacco smoko. The place smelled most offensively. Cards were scattered over the apartment, and the table covered with glasses which, once contained whisky. He moved that it be reserved for the purpose it was set apart.
The Resumption of Land for Mining Purposes Bill, Ihe Native Lands Division Bill, The Native Lands Act Amendment Bill, and The Otago Harbor Bill were passed. The Resident Magistrates Act Amendment Bill was thrown out. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
In reply to Mr Steward, the- Hon Mr Johnston said the railway rates for carriage of grain would be revised in time to meet the convenieuoe of the forthcoming grain season.
Replying to Mr Montgomery as to what Bills would be dropped, the Hon. Major Atkinson said the Public Works Estimates could not be brought clown until Government knew whether or not the Loan Bills would pass. A string opinion had been expressed that the Loan Bills should not be proceeded the Taxation for Railway Works Committee had given its report. He understood the report had been to-day given in, and it would be considered as scon as possible. In the meantime he would proceed with the Local Government Bills, and he was hopeful they would get through them that night. The Taxing Committee’s report would then bo considered, and the Loan Bills now standing far down on the Order Paper, would be brought on for consideration to-morrow, and the Public Works Estimates brought down cu Ihursday. these and the Supplementary Estimates nouid be considered til Friday, Government would then bo rcauy t>> proceed with any Bills which the House might th.uk fit to pass.
lu Committee on the Roads and Bridges Bill, on a motion by Mr Turnbull that money derived from “the sale of lands within any provincial district lie expended within that district alon' 1 , an animated dehalo took place, hut on a division it was lost by 32 to 30. The Bill was reported with amendments.
The Crmrn and Native Lards Rating Bill was then considered in Committee,
