The Temuka Leader SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1882. THE PROPOSED LINSEED COMPANT.

‘A meeting will be held next Tuesday afternoon, in the Wallingford Hotel, at 3.30 p.m., for the purpose of consider-’ ing the advisability of floating a company to manufacture European flax into linseed oil, cake, twine, etc. Mr Pearce, a rope and twine manufacturer from Christchurch, will he in attendance, and will giro all the necessary information regarding the matter. It is, we learn, Mr Pearce’s intention to settle, in the district, and take up a large number of shares in the proposed company,, if it is successfully floated . - He : has considerable experience in that, line, and it is a sufficient guarantee of its prospects of success, that he is ready to give up , his business in Christchucch and come to settle here. We have : rery little doubt of the project succeeding, but there is one thing connected with Jt which .we., would like to put before the public in its true light. At the preliminary meeting it was decided to call the Company the ISouth Canterbury Linse'ed Oil, Cake, and Fibre Manufacturing Company, by a majority of one, the other portion of the meeting being desirous of substituting Temuka for South Canterbury, so as to read the Temuka Linseed Oil, Cake and Fibre Manufacturing Company/ In our humble opinion those who voted for its name being “ The South Canterbury ” in preference to “ The Temuka ” made a mistake. One name is as good as the other fur the purposes of success. It will not make one iota of difference which name it is called, cither in floating the company or in carrying on its business successfully afterwards, but il might make a deal of difference as regards'the advancement of the town of Temuka. If this Company is floated the Press Agency will telegraph it *ll over the colony, and if its name is to be “ The South Canterbury ” nine-tenths of the readers of newspapers will thmk that it has been started in Timaru, that town being the capital of the district,' and the town and district of Temuka will get no credit ..for it. If, on th« contrary, its name were to be Temuka, people throughout the colony would eay to themselves, “Temuka must be a go-ahead,; enterprising place," It would:

have the result of attention” being drawn j To i perhaps of fresh 'capitalists 1 ‘coming Intake; up theis residence and establish themselves in'business. here. This ls the point, \ It would igive Teuiuka.-. a ri*nuK to'-Jiave itX circulated through the colony that a Butter and . Checgc Factory, aqd rf a Linseed s Cake, and. Fibre? Manufacturing .Cpm| .panydiad-been- established-in itin-such - quick succession, while it doev not one whit as regards the - successof the Company itself. We have the interests ! of Temuka sincerely- at heart although it docs not bother much about our. interests, and it is in the interest of Temuka that we how ask those' who will attend the meeting next Tuesday afternoon to ’ take steps to alter this. Temuka’s name has gone down, and it is the duty of its inhabitants to do all they can to gel it up again. Surely the least they can do is to give it credit for anything it does. We were surprised to notice, owners of housj property in this town voting against the name being “ The Temuka” but it is this near-sightedness which has destroyed the town. Wo appeal to those who have the matter,, in their hands to take steps to rectify this ciror before it is too late.

. TEMUKA-OXFORD RAILWAY, The agitation in connection with the construction of the above railway is likely to lead to some practical results. Petitions have been signed all over the district, and forwarded by Mr Coltman, of Geraldine, to the member for the dis--trict, and the Minister for Public Works. A reply has been received by .Mr Coltman from the Government acknowledging the petition, and stating that it will receive serious consideration. We learn also that the petition is being supported by the Hon. >Mr Wigley, the Hon Mr Acland, and, Mr Postlcthwßite,M,H.R., who arc bringing, pressure to bear upon the Government to allocate a sum -of money - for the work. There is every reason' to hope that something will be got. A few nights ago a sum of £35,000 was thrown out of the estimates, and the proposed steam communication ; item was r«ducod by £20,000. Thus the Goyernnient have £55,000 to allocate, and we see no reason why they should not give that sum to this district. There is,no. other plac« so well; entitled to it, for there is no 'other districts of its size that contributes so much to tile revenue., .
