THE FLAX INDUSTRY.
XO THK EDITOR. Sir,—-It must Have been highly gratifying to all who have taken an active part in promoting the establishment of our Dairy and Bacon-curiug Factory Company to see the goedly gathering of shareholders this afternoon ; and witness the spirited and business-like manner in which articles of Association were discussed, permanent directors elected, etc. Many of jour readers will have been already informed that the apparent apathy displayed for the last month or two by those advocating the growth and manufacture of European Flax into oil, c«ke, and fibre, has been caused by a desire not to clash, or any way interfere, with the floating of that company, the consummation of .which has been so successfully achieved this day, As that no longer stands in eu r way, I feel it is highly necessary that the Flax question sheuld receive the immediate attention of well wishers to that important industry. My reasons are simple —lst. That I and several other farmers have prepared for sowing a considerable acreage of linseed this seasen. 2nd. That to insure the best return of seed and length of straw for fibre, all seed should b« sown or drilled, on well-prepared land, between 20th August and 15th September, to insure against early drought. 3rd, That many who may fed diffident (from late silence on the subject) to commit seed to the ground, will have renewed confidence to act when they see the project oocupying public attention. 4th. That it is absolutely necessary that all who intend to crop shauld prepare themselves with seed without delay, as I belieye most, if net all, the seed available in this district is already bespoken. As one who feels confident of the importance and remunerative character of this new industry amongst us, I shall take the liberty, Mr Editor, with your favor in publishing this hurried letter, to invite all who feel an interest in the same to meet me in the Wallingford Hotel at 3 p.m. ©n Tuesday next, 22nd August, when I will place before them all tho useful information I can. I request that any friends attending will furnish all the material possible, so as to facilitate • the speedy achievement of our object.—l am, etc., Edwabd Pilbkow. Temnka, August 15th, 1882.
