THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE AND MRS ROWE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I see by your report of the proceedings of the Temuka School Committee that the Committea have decided to dispense with tire services of Mrs Rowe as second teacher. It seems to me, Mr Editor, that the Committee scarcely know what they are doing, or that they have something against Mrs Rowe which they have not the moral courage to tell her. The excuse that they give for dismissingher is simply ridiculous. They say that they want a second master. How is it that they did not that out before ? Have they had some complaints lately about her 1 I don't think so. Mrs Rowe has been here for the last eight or nine years, and during the whole of that time there has not been a single complaint against her for not being able to manage in the absence of the head master. In answer to a letter written by Mrs Rowe to the Committee asking for an explana. tion, our friend Mr Mendelsoa, whom everybody knows is full and brimming over with law, coolly moves that Mrs Rowe be referred to such and such a Clause in the Education Act. The Committee has not the courtesy to write and explain matters if there are any to explain. But what makes the whole thing worse is the appointing a boy, inexperienced and, I believe, uncertificated, over the head of an old, experienced, and certificated teacher. Sir, I should recommend that if the Committee are satisfied, and are not ashamed of what they have done, they should call a meeting of householders to endorse their action. By inserting this in your journal you will oblige, Magistek. Temuka, July 24, 1882.
