SINGULAR ACCIDENT.

A severe and singular accident happened recently to a young Scandinavian lad, at Mr Cave’s, Te-Ore-Ore. It appears that Mr Cave is greatly molested with rabbits from the land adjacent, and he has been employing a number of Maoris destroying them. Among them was the lad in question—a boy of twelve —and, after being well cautioned, he was entrusted with a supply of poisoned grain. In the evening, as the weather was damp and cold, the bands assembled round a large tire in the kitchen, when the lad attracted the attention of everyone by his body becoming enveloped in smoke. Rushing into the open air the smoke changed to sheets of flame. Mr Cave and some assisstants rendered everv possible aid, and did their utmost to save the boy from a fearful death. Bags, blankets, and tarpaulins were used, and the flames were stifled, but the moment the covering was withdrawn, the fire burst out afresh. As a last resort, to prevent the hoy being fairly roasted, he was thrown on his face while Mr Cave ripped off his clothing. It was then found that the fire arose from pieces of phosphorous, which he had secreted in his vest and trousers pockets. The boy was so badly scorched that it was feared his injuries would prove fatal, but thanks to the careful nursing of Mrs Cave, he is now on a lair way to recovery. Mr Cave had his hands badly burnt, and the marks of his injuries will not he washed off for some time to come. —Christchurch Telegraph.
