AN INGENIOUS DEVICE.

An American paper states that a-,if*tch-maker ‘of Middlebury, Vermont,-has' appliedihis ingenuity to, the construction •f a clock;whic|i acts outrthe aSsassinatipm of President, Garfield, The machine is thus described It is a cuckoo clock, with an attachment * represent ing a railroad station in • miniature. At one window is a ticket agent dealing out tickets, while in another;-A telegraph operator is seen busy at his work, and truckmen, porters, train despatphers, etc.., _are all flying aroundas natural as life./ All of these figures are of wood, about 2in long. ■ At the end. of * each ■ hour the ■. cuckoo announces the fact, and- immediately a figure of President Garfield appears on the platform on which the scene is enacted accompanied by an effigy of Mr Blaine, Guiteau to follow him, having just alighted from a-truck waggon, and as z he fires at the President the latter falls. Just then a train of cars comes dashing in, and in the : confusion the principal actors are -carried into the depot out of of sight; ' After' the train despatcher has given the signal, and the train has gone, < a small door* at the left opens and a priest appears, book in hand, in the act of reading a funeral service ; while at the same time another door at the right opens, and Guiteau ‘ appears on the gallows. The priest retires; the gallows disappear with Guiteau, and the doors close. The performance takes about three minutes.
