THE DEATH OF DARWIN.

Charles Robert Darwin, the noted scientist, as already announced by cable, died on the 19th April. He had been ill some days, and was supposed to be in a fair way of recovery, but he bad a relapse on the Tuesday preceding his death, from which he never recovered. He had suffered some time from weakness of the heart, but continued to work till the last. He was taken ill with pains of the chest, faintness, and naiisel. The nausea lasted more or less during Wednesday, the 19th, and culminated in death in the afternoon. He was fully conscious till within a quarter of an hour of his death. The event has brought out a series of tributes, Ei glish and Continental, to him as the foremost modern man of science. The unanimity, thus far (says an English despatch), is unbroken by ecclesiastical com ment. The funeral at Westminster Abbey on the 26th brought together the representatives of every class most eminent in England except Royalty. No member of the Royal family was present personally or by deputy, their absence provoking much sharp comment. “He was ignored in death as in life,” said Professor Huxley, “by the reigning dynasty.” Canon Farrar pronounced the eulogy at the obsequies. He said there was' reason to believe the attacks made upon religion in his name were contrary to his solemn convictions. He (Farrar) maintained that religious faith rests upon foundations which no physical discoveries can impair. ■ .
