EXECUTION OF HIROKI.
Hiroki was-executed at New Plymouth gaol last Thursday morning. He slept soundly the night beforefbut in the morning he wept bitterly. Archdeacon Govett attended him to the scaffold, winch he ascended with a firm step and exhibited no signs of emotion, but. stood calmly while the ropa and the cap were being adjusted. Death must have been instantaneous as not a muscle moved after he was dropped. He confessed to the guilt for which he was hanged; stating that it was all about the land. He said he warned the Native Minister that lie would .kill apy’white men that would go on his land, apd warned the men when they came. ; When he told McLean he would kill him he said “never mind, you are a b—— pig,” In September he went to the camp to kill any of them he found there. McLean was in a tent airid fife'd at him - (Hiroki), and the ball passed through his clothes under his armpit. He took the gun off Maclean; who then ran away. He fired after McLean and lie fell close to the river. This was what killed McLean. He took away something, merely to show them to the natives. He told several natives what he had done. He would have confessed long ago if he had been asked to do so.
