THE PANAMA CANAL.

The following clip from Mitchell's Maritime Register is calculated to awaken some interest in the colony in the success or otherwise of the Panama Canal -.—The opening of the cairel would do more for New Zealand than for any other of our colonies. It is possible to land mail steamers tbere in 38 or 40 days from this country, via San Francisco, and thence by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's boats. Those conveyed by Brindisi and Suez take six or seven days longer. When the Pacific service was first established the mails were transported across the Isthmus of Panama, and- then reshipped for London, but the vessels were frequently delayed, from quarantine &nd other causes, for some weeks, and consequently the route was not popular with passengers. When the canal has been completed, there seems no adequate reason why the old route should uot be adopted once more. As compared with the Suez Canal route there will be a sav--1 ing of 1155 miles, while the distanoe between New York and Auckland will be 3000 miles than by Cnps Horn. If the United States should hereafter modify its tariff, the Americans may easily seize a portion of our trade with that colony. In any case New Zealand will for the future Le far less dependant upon Australia than she has hitherto been, and a great impetus will be given her trade generally.

Holloway's Ointment, and Pills.—Outward Infirmities.—Before the discovery of (these remedies many cases of sores, ulcers, etc., were pronounced to be hopelessly incurable because the treatment pursued tended to destroy the strength it was incompetent to preserve and to exasperate the systems it was inadequate to remove. Holloway's Pills exert the most wholesome powers over the unhealthy flesh or skin, without debarring the patient from f-esh air and exercise, and thus the constitutional v : gour is husbanded while the most malignant ulcer 3, abscesßes, and the skin diseases are in process of cur». Both Ointment and Pills make the blood richer and pure?, instead of permitting it to fall into that poor and wate.y slate so fatal to many laboring under chronic ulcerations.
