OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.

The first session of the eighth Parliament of New Zealand was opened by a Commission consisting of Sir William Fitzherbert, the Hon Mr Whitaker, and the Hon. Major Richmond. The usual formalities having been gone through in the Legislative Council Chamber, the members of the Lower House were summoned, when fortyseven of them attended.

The Proclamation having been read, they were directed to elect a Speaker. Amongst those present, who took the oath and a seat in the Lower House, was Mr Pilliet, the unseated member for Stanmore. There were altogether 56 members sworn in, after which the election of a Speaker was proceeded with. The Hon Major Atkinson moved that Sir G. M. O’Rorke be elected Speaker. The motion was seconded by Mr Macandrew, both mover and seconder referring in very flattering terms to the able manner in which Sir George O’Rorke had acquitted himself as Speaker on previous occasions.

Mr Levestam opposed the election on the grounds that Sir G. M. O’Rorke had forfeited the confidence of the House by the way in which he acted in connection with the passing of the Representation Bill last session, but as no further opposition was offered the motion was carried, and Sir G. M. O’Rorke elected Speaker.

Sir (i. M: O’Eorke said he had sat in the House for 21 years and always striven when Speaker to hold the balance of Justice equitably between all parties. He thanked the members for having elected him, and asked their co-operation in conducting their Parliamentary duties, The House adjourned at 3.15,
