It has transpired from reliable sources that before his release I 'from Kilmainham gaol, Mr Parnellpromised that agrarian outraged in Ireland should cease, and undertook to .co-operate with the Government towards that end.
The May-June series ; of colonial wool auctions opened, today with a bataloguo of 6300 bales. There was a fair attendance of buyers, and the bidding was marked with good spirit. The closing prices at last auctions were well maintained. The series, will (dose on the 4th July. At today’s wool sale merino wools were in request, and a good demand was experienced for lots of this description in the catalogue. . .; ; Colonial.breadstuffs’ are dull. . The police today effected the arrest at Liverpool of ten men on board the outward-bound steamer Egypt. It is believed the capture has been hiade in connection with the assassination of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Mr Burke.

opposition
In the House of Commons last night the matter of the alleged undertaking between the Government and Mr Parnell in regard to the latter’s release was under discussion. Several Conservatives reaffirmed the truth of the statements which had been current regarding the compact between Mr Parnell and the Government, and denounced the covenant as utterly infamous and degrading. Mr Gladstone, in reply hotU denied the truth of the assertion, and challenged proof of the alleged compact.
The cricket match, Australians versus Oxford University, was won today hy the Australians by nine wickets.
Adelaide wheat has declined to 535, ex store. New Zealand wheat remains at 51s, Adelaide flour hasfallen to 355, ex store. At the wool sales today 10600 s bales were offered. Port Phillip wools were languid, and small quantities have been withdrawn.

It has transpired that, acting under the advice of the foreign Consuls, the Khedive has patched up an agreement with bis Ministers, and the crisis, which was imminent, has thus been averted. . .; :

Melbourne, May 17,
Last night Mr Berry’s amendment to the Address in Reply to the Governor’s Speech, amounting to a vote of want of confidence in the Ministry, was rejected by 45 to 29. The reduced tariff for telegraph messages between Australia and: New Zealand will take effect from the Ist of June next.
A general rise has been experienced in the grain markets since last week. Milling barley is firm at an advance of sd. ami is now quoted at ss. Wheat is firm at 7s for shipping. New Zealand oats have risen to ss, and 4s 3d for feeding, and 4s 4d .to 4s 5d for milling sorts. Prices are firmly
