TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
At the meeting of the above held last Thursday the report ot the Committee appointed to consider the question of raising a loan was read. It stated that the exports of the port were over 70,000 tons per annum, and recommended the rates for shipping should be raised so that, the revenue might be increased from £SOOO to £7OOO a year. They recommended to raise a loan of £IOO,OOO at 5 per cent> terminable in 30 years. After some discussion the. report was adopted,"and a resolution passed asking the co-operation of local bodies.
The report of the Sub-Committee, appointed to consider the harbor staff, stated that a harbormaster had been vertised for at a salary of £3OO a year t and that his staff should consist of a coxswain, at £2 16s per week, and two, men, at £2 9s per week. Mr Turnbull said with regard to the Duke of Sutherland that she was rotten and leaky, and that her pumps were foul, and asked whether any further; inquiries would be made. : *
The Chairman said that the vessel had a certificate of having been re-surveyed and re-classed. . ■ .
Mr K. F. Gray said the Harbor Board l ought to have power to examine vessels on their arrival otherwise all the old tubsj in existenc-3 might be sent to Timaru to be wrecked.
In compliance with Captain Sutter's request Captain Mills was sent for, who made the following statement re the berthing of vessels : —" Some time back he brought a large steamer, the Hawea, inside the breakwater. SheJwas drawing 9 feet forward and 11 feet 1 aft." Shortly afterwards he met. Mr Evans, who asked him why he did not bring the barque Candidate inside J He replied that it was not safe. Mr Evans told him he could find 50 other men who would do so. : 'He (Captain Mills) answered that '■■ Mr Evans might find 50 fools to, do, it, but he himself not; fool enough to dp it. Mr Evans then told him he would get Wm dismissed from his position. No other member' of the Board but Mr Evans had interferred withhim. *

■ With regard to, the Engineerssalary Mr Teschmaker moved — i That it be not but after some discussion Mr Gray moved an amendment—" That the report of the Committee fixing the salary at £SOO a year be adhered to," and it was carried.
The'Engineer was instructed to survey the shingle bank every two months so as to keep'a record of its movement. : • The appointment of a successor to Captain Mills, who was dismissed at the last meeting of the Board, was then proceeded with. Thftre were 14 applicants, amongst whom was Captain Mills, and in favor of whom a strong petition signed by several shipmasters, waslayed before the Board, praying that he might be reinstated.
After a stormy discussion lasting over an hour, Captain Mills was re-appointed on the motion of Mr K. F. Gray, seconded by Mi" Tesch'emaker. •• i ; Other business of minor importance was then transacted, and the meeting ' adjourned.
