ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, May 5
The homeward Australian and New Zealand mails, via San Francisco, which left Auckland on the 28th March, were delivered in London yesterday. It has transpired that the exchange of communications between the Powers which has been proceeding for some time past on the subject of the Egyption question has resulted in an agreement being arrived at to substitute Prince Halim in place of Tewfick Pasha on the Egyptian throne, if this should become necessary ; to abandon the prinple of Turkish occupation in Egypt, and to leave the initiative in Egyptian affairs to France.
Consols have advanced to 191 f ; New Zealand securities remain at the following quotations :—5 per cent 10-40 loan, ex dir. ; 3£ per cent 1879-1904 loan, 1021.
Adelaide wheat, ex store, is quoted at 55b, and New Zealand wheat, ex store, 525. Adelaide flour, ex store, is worth 275. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,480‘090 quarters, being an increase of 140,000 quarters on last week’s return.
Australian tallow Best beef is quoted at 425, being an advance of Is ; best mutton 43s 6d, an advance of Is 6d.

It has transpired that Mr Gladstone has agreed to accept the amendment
which has been proposed on the motion for the adoption of cldture. The arrangement provides that cloture shall not be applied unless supported by a majorty of two thirds of the House. The Lord Mayor of Loudon has been requested to summon a public meeting for the purpose of preparing a p etitiou for presentation to the Queen praying that Her Majesty will dissolve Parliament.
Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, has fallen to 545, and New Zealand do to 51s. Adelaide flour, ex store, has declined to 365.
Australian tallow is unchanged at 42s for best beef, and 43s 6d for best mutton.

Both Houses of the Victorian Parliament adjourned today as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Chief Secretary and Under-Secretary forMreland.
Sydney, May 9
A dastardly attempt was made last night to overturn the train on the Caraphelltown line by placing logs on the rails. The obstruction was fortunately discovered in time to avert an accident. The perpetrators of the outrage have not yet been discovered.
