The Temuka Leader. TUESDAY, MAY 2, 1582.
To-day the residents of this Licensing district will be called upon to exercise the privileges which (he Local Option Clause of the New Licensing Act gives them, that is to give their votes.as to whether the number of licenses in this district shall or shall not be increased during the next three years. The voting papers which are to be submitted to them will contain two propositions which arc as follows :—I vote that the number of publican’s licenses in the district may be increased. 2. I vote that the mmibfr of publican’s licenses in the district may not be increased. These are the two questions on which the ratepayers arc called upon to vote, and wc now publish them, so as to give our readers an idea of what they are to do when they enter the polling booth. The directions on the voting paper request that the voter shall strike out the one of these propositions for which he does not intend to vote by drawing a pencil through it. For instance, if he
wants to vote for the increase of licenses he must draw his pencil through the proposition which says they must not be increased, and vice versa. The result of voting for not increasing them is that no new licenses can be granted in this district for three years. The matter is not left to the discretion of the Licensing Committee, The clause referring to it says most emphatically that no licenses shall be granted until it has been previously determined by the ratepayers whether the number of publicans licenses may or may not be increased. We publish these facts to let our readers understand exactly what they are doing when they vote tc-lay, and wo trust they will be guided by common sense, and vote as they think will he most beneficial to the district.
