against the Jews having been of a volent and widespread character is fully admitted by Government. In addition to the official accounts,-reports are -to hand, from unofficial sources, in which the assailants of the Jews arc charged with' having ’beenV guilty of acts of 4 the most .barbarous and atrocious character. ; ! ! '

April 23.
The Merchant Shipping and Underwriters’ Association report the arrival of the rhips City of Nankin, from Lyttelton (left January 12th) ; Loch Cree, from the Bluff ; and the Lochnagar. The death is announced of Mr Charles Darwin, M. A., F.R.S., the well-known naturalist and philosopher, aged 73. A great outcry has been; raised on account of a police circular which, it has transpired, has recently been issued by the Irish Executive, ’ notifying that escorts and magistrates will be held blameless it, having good reason to suspect that an attack is about to be made upon them, they should shoot persons who may be innocent of crime. The subjects was brought up in the House of Commons last night, and Mr Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, acknowledged, in reply to a question, that the circular has been issued, and admitted that the action of the Executive was indiscreet. During the debate which ensued, Mr E. Eedmond, Home Rule member for New « Ross; made a violent attack upon the Government, and refusing to bo called to order, was suspended for alluding to Mr Forster in vilifying language. An important meeting was held last evening to promote a Fisheries Exhibition. The meeting was attended ,by many influential persons, among whom was Sir Henry Parkes, Premier of New South Wales, who referred to the proposed Exhibition as likely to stimulate the hitherto neglected fisheries of Australia,
Calcutta, April 21
Telegrams have been received from Burmah, reporting that King Theebaw has ' caused the Queen and ; fifty-two notables of the kingdom to be put to death. No details of the massacre are yet to hand,
AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne, April 22. No fresh cases ot smallpox have been reported to the Health Officer. The body of a man believed to have been murdered has been found in the Friendly Societies’ grounds at Richmond. The supposed murderer has been arrested by the police, Wheat is unchanged at 6s to 6s 3d ; town flour, per ton, is quoted at £l4 ; country brands, £l3 to £l3 as. The firms of Meadway and Bell, and David Maslerton, of this city, have' become insolvent. It is apprehended that other mercantile houses will shortly be compelled to suspend payment.
April 23.
A cape of attempted murder and suicide occurred today in Russell street. A Hungarian named Sieber shot at and dangerously wounded a barmaid, and subsequently killed himself. The crime is attributed to jealousy.
