AROWHENUA SPORTS.
The sports which were to be held at Arowhenua last Monday, and which were postponed owing to the inclemency of the weather, passed off yesterday very successfully. There was a fair attendance, and all the events were well competed for, but doubtless had last Monday been fine (he attendance would-have beea much larger. Mr Tombs, the enterprising proprietor of the Arowhenua Hotel, did everything in his power to minister to the comforts of his visitors, and there was nothing t< ■ be desired in the way the duties of the civil and obliging (Secretary, Mr T. Sawyers were carried out. We have to thank Mr Upiichard for giving us the information contained in this report. 100 Yabds Maiden Race Ist prize £1 ; 2nd 10s. R. Chute 1 B. Nichols 2 J. McKinnon also competed, and the race was . well contested. The winner maintained the lead from the beginning, but was closely followed by the others. 200 Yards Handicap Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd 10s. B Nichols (10 yds) ... 1 T. McAuliffe (scratch) ... 2 R. Chute (10 yds) and McKinnon also ran Nichols was never overtaken, and he won easily, although McAulifte ran well. Hop, Step and Jump. Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, 10s, T. McAuliffe (37ft lOin) ... 1 M. Collins (37ft 6in) ... 2 J. McKinnon retired at 36ft. Mile and a Hale Walking Handicap. Ist prize, £1 10s:; 2nd, l'os. J. Lawrie ("scratch) ... 1 W. Hobbs (lOOvds) ... 2 R. Chute(6oyds)and E. Williams(Boyda) also started. In the fourth lap Lawrie passed Hobbs, and walked in easily. Running Long Jump Ist prize, £1: 2nd 10s. T. McAuliffe (18ft 7in) ..... 1 M. Collins (18ft lin) .... H J. Lynch also competed. Mile and a Half Hurdle Race (Handicap). Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd 10s. T. McAuliffe (scratch) ... 1 B. Nichols (50yds) 2 J. McKinnon (scratch) also ran. About a quarter of a mile from home McAuliffe to"k the lead, and won easily. Running High Jump. Ist prize, £1 ; . *'~ 2nd, 10s. R. Chute (sft) 1 M Collins (4f011in)... ... 2 J. Collins gave in at 4ft 9in. Vaulting with Pole. Ist prize, £1; 2nd, 10s. T. McAuliffe (Bft lOin) ... 1 S. Mcßratney (Bft 6in) ... 2 J. Lynch auc" J. McKinnon retired at Bft 3in.
Half Mile Flat Race (Handicap) Ist prize, £1 ; 2nr>, 10$. J Lawrie (scritch) 1 ! T. McAuliffe (scratch) ... 2 J. McKinnon (scratch.) ran thirl, and 0. Grt-aves (120yds) also competed, and kept the lend for the first four laps, when he was passed by Lawrio, who won a well-co.ttested race. Consolation. M. Collins 1 T. Lyons 2 D. Barrat and J. Brosnahan also ran. Three Long Jumps. Ist prize, £1 : 2nd 10s. M. Collins (31ft 2in) 1 T.J Brosn;.han (31ft) ... 2 J. Collins also competed. 100 Yards Sack Rage. Ist prize. 10s 2nd 10s. J. Lawrie ... ... ... 1 J. Lynch ... ... ... 2 This finished the day's sports. A. ball was held at the hotel in the evening at which there was a good at tendance, and dancing was kept up spiritedly until a late hour. Mr and Mrs Tombs left nothing undone that would tend to the comfort and pleasure of their guests, and all were highly satisfied with the evening's amusement.
