A PITEOUS TALE.
On a cold and wet morning in December last a groom, out of work, and his wife, left Devi2es workhouse, where they had been detained through the woman’s i lines-. She was near her confinement, and suff - ng severly from bronchitis. Afar they had walked four miles on the road to Hungerford, tie woman sank down unable to proceed ; it was raining heavily, and her husband was obliged to carry her on his bark for nearly four miles, till they re chad a village, where they took, shelter in a stable. After a short rest they proceeded with lire intention of reaching Pewsey j but the woman quits brokedown and, as the husband was exhausted, ha had to leave her by the roadside while ha went on to Pewsey for aid,but it was a dark night, and he lost his way- ; when he reached the place,the police lent him. a track, and, as bs did not return the inspector presently went down the road in seated) of them, but by the time they were rescued they had been some three hours by- the roadside. The woman died the same night, an examination showing she was suffering from inflammation of the lungs. The jury highly commended the conduct of the husband, as well they might, but it would have been m re to the purpose, remarks a newspaper, if had, severely censured the culpable apathy (to say the least of it) i.f the officials at Devizes in permitting the woman to leave the p'ace when in so lamentable a condition.
