PLEASANT POINT RACES.

President : Alex, Mee, Esq ; Vice. President : Edward Acton, Esq. Stewards : Ohas. Wright, Jas. Sullivan, T. Kinahan, J H Smith, W J Gibson, James Fraser, John Mitchell, and Jas. South. Judge: John Meikie. Starter : A. Meßratney Clerk of the Course : Reg, Orton, Handicapper : D. McKenzie. Clerk op the Scales : H. B. Boultbee.

The Pleasant Point Races were held yesterday in a paddock belonging to Mr Jackson, distant about a quarter- of a mile from the town. The weather was extremely fine, the day being unusually warm for this season of the year, but the heat was tempered by a strong breeze which rendered it very pleasant The races started at 1 15 sharp, and rhere was then on the ground a very good attendance, which later on in the day increased considerably. The arrangements of the Committee were as good as could be expected considering that the course is a temporary one The races were held in a stubble field, which, of course, was not extra suitable, but the Committee had done all in their power to make it a good racecourse, and on the whole they were very successful. The absence of sporting men and the . games which which are usually seen on racecourses was very noticeable, Aunt Sally and a nameless game with balls being all that were on the ground, Mr Peter Bell did an excellent business in the refreshment, booth and the second—a luncheon one—was also well patroned. On the whole the races were a great success, and amongst those present were many from this town, Tiraaru, Winchester, Geraldine, and the surrounding districts. Only two horses entered into competition for the Handicap Hurdle Race, and virtually only one horse competed, as the second one never went beyond the second hurdle. The Hack Hurdle Race brought out a field of five horses. An indifferent start was effected, Mr D. Geaney’s Sparkle getting off with the lead, but baulked at the first hurdle, and allowed the rest to go by. The Fawn and Nelly had the race all their own way the rest of the journey. The third race brought out a field of seven, and was an exceedingly pretty one, all the horses keeping well together to the finish, Swindler winning easily, with Kate Kelly a good second, and Flora Terap l e third. Only three horses came forward for the Point Cup. Oastout and Flora Temple kept together for the first lap, but from that out Deceiver took the lead and won by half a head. The owner ma}’ thank the excellent way in which the herse was ridden for the win. Five horses ran for the Hack Selling Race, but the Kerry Lass lead from the and won easily, Sparrowtail being a long way behind, and the rest nowhere. St. Patrick’s Day Handicap brought out a field of five horses. Castout and Eleanor colt ran side by side for the first lap, but in the second Swindler took the lead and won, Deceiver coming in second, owing to Castout having been pu’led up. The Hurry Scurry proved a very exciting race in which Mr Murphy, of the Point Hotel, rode his own horse and came in a good second. The Consolation brought a field of four, and Kate Kelly was leading until she bolted off the course leaving Castout an easy victory. On the whole the races were a great success, and the Committee may well be congratulated on the result Temuka people mustered very strong on the ground, who were taken to the scone in various kinds of vehicles. The Sec-

retary, Mi Gaze, deserves great praise for the way he worked. He was civil to all, -and particularly obliging tv the Press.
