Telegrams are to hand reporting that the Herzegovinian insurgents have lately, suffered several defeats at different pcipts at the hands of the Austrian, troops, and that they are rapidly losing, ground and falling back from their, positions. St, Petersburg, March 10. General Skobeloff, who was ordered to return to this city from London, in consequence of his speech to the Servian, Students at Paris, has arrived and had ' an audience of the Czar. No particulars of the interview haye, however, yet transpired. * Capetown, March 8. Telegrams are to hand from the. Transvaal, stating that fuither severe, figting has taken place, between the Boers and the natives under the chiefMontsinia, residing beyond the boundary fixed by the Convention. Six defendants in the sweeps cases were fined 5Cs and costs < each, by the -City Bench this morning, the Mayor pnd Mr Fish being among the uum ber. Invercargill, March 11, The articles of the Southland Farmers* Co-operative Associati n ;(Limited), were registered unler the Industrial Provident Society’s Act 1877, this mojufing, and the permanent Committee of management elected. Mr Bateman, has undertaken to act as secretary for a time, and place the Association in working order. The copperatiye movement among the farmers js now looked upon as an established fact, and business operations are fairly commenced. March 12. At an influentially attended meeting last eyeniug, it was decided to form a Southland Whaling Gompanys with a papital ,pf £IO,OOO. It was the opinion pf those present that vessels of 100 ton? register would suit the requirements of the Company.
