LOCAL BOARD OF HEALTH.
The usual meeting of the Local Board of Health was held yesferday. PRESENTMessrs Talbot (Chairman), Paterson, Austin, and Ensor. INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES' REPORT. The Inspector of Nuisances' report was read as follows : Sir,—l have the honor to report that in accordance with the resolution of the Board passed on the 7th February relating to Vine street road drain, I served notices on Mr Ollivier (Temuka Hotel) and Mr Coira (Royal Ho' ■ 1 ) requesting them to discontinue allowing the sewage from their hotels to enter the said road drains. I have reason to believe that these gentlemen will wait on you this day in reference to the matter At intervals during the past month I have inspected a considerable portion of the township, and I hope to have the inspection completed in time to lay before the Board at its next meeting a report fully dealing with the sanitary condition of Temuka and Sod town. Mr Hayhurst complained, I understand, at the last meeting of the Board that since my appointment he had never seen me in my official capacity, and. further than that, that I was ncgleciing my duties as your inspector. I fee! that Mr has not acted very fairly towards me in the matter, for knowing that he w*>s going to make a complaint Mr Hayhurst might have informed me of that fact, when I should have asked the Board for permission to be present so as to have an opportunity to refute Mr Hayhurst's statement. I am unaware whether Mr Hayhurst entered into particulars to prove neglect of duty or whether he considered it a sufficient proof if he asserted it. If Mr Hayhurst gave particulars I trust the Board will kindly direct that a summary of the particulars be given to me when I shall consider it due to myself to reply to them. lam quite willing to admit that it is possible that Mr Hayhurst has never seen your Inspector in his official capacity, but that proves rothing further than this, that Mr Hayhurst never endeavored to place himself in my way during the numerous times that I have inspected Temuka and Sod Town, reports of which are in the possession of the Board. I confidently deny that I have neglected my duties in any instance, and to show that I am anxious at all times to prevent nuisances arising I may infom that the Temuka Boarding House built by Mr Hayhurst without sufficient drain age accommodation has necessitated visits from me not only on week days but on Sundays also to compel removal of filth. Thinking it advisable to give Mr Hayhurst an opportunity to point out to me any nuisance, I wrote to him stating the time I should be inspecting Temuka and inviting that gentleman to accompany me. I received no reply and I am therefore of the opinion that Mr Hayhurst's complaint to the Board cannot be connected in any way with the wish for the abatement of nuisances.—l have, &c, George Bolton, Inspector .of Nuisances." No business of any importance was transacted,
