IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION.

A return has just been prepared showing the immigration and emigration of New Zealand during the month of January, 1882. From this it appears that 450 persons arrived in the Colony from Great Britain, 647 from Australian Colonies, and 93 from other places—total, 119 G. On the other hand, 12 persons left New Zealand for Great Britain, 355 for Australian Colonies, and 63 for other places- total, 523. Thus the gain to the Colony during the month was 700. The 450 English arrivals included 13 Government nominated immigrants, and the departures for the Australian Colonies included 13 Chinese, No Chinese arrived during the month. The returns for the calendar year 1881 are also now complete. During that period the arrivals in New Zealand were as follows :—From the United Kingdom, 3507 ; from the Australian colonies, 5579 ; other places, 602 ; total, 9688. The departures were ; For the United Kingdom, 369 ; Australian colonies, 6716 ; other places, 646 ; total, 8033, Net gain to the colony, 1655. Of these, however, 658 were Chinese, leaving a net European gain of 997, of whom 102 were Government nominated immigrants. The total arrival of Chinese during 1881 were 1029, and departures 271 ; the former being nearly double as many as the nggi’egate of the two previous years, and the latter being 15 fewer than in 1880, f.’hile there was ten fewer than in 1879. Comparing the last three years we find that the arrivals were respectively 23,257, 15,152, 9688 -total 48,057- Thus thei’e has been a net gain tto the colony each yea", and a total balance in its favor of 27,612. It is noteworthy, however, that arrivals have decreased and departures increased each successive year, but this is chiefly due co the decrease of Government immigrants, 1 who numbered 20,311 in 1879, 2688 in (1880, and oniy 102 in 1881.
