The Revenue; —A Wellington- telegram.says : —lt is rumored in well-informed circles that the balance will show an indisputable surplus of fully £IOO,OOO, as all branches o*' the revenue are working up. surprisingly. There has been a remarkable spurt in therailway receipts. It was thought that the | splendid return (£77,000) for the four weekei ended 7th ult., was mainly due to exceptional traffic during the holidays, but I hear that subsequent returns are even more favorable proportionately. It is now thought by those ! best qualified to form an opinion that while the gross receipts for the year will exceed £890,000, if indeed they do not rdach £900,000, a 8 three months ago nobodyanticipated that more than £875,000 would be totalled. There is a great improvement under the head of working expenses.. So far as can, be calculated at present,, the year's net profit will be quite £400,000. 1.0.0.
