The Temuka Leader THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1882
So far the people throughout the colony seem to use the power given to them under the New Licensing Act very judiciously. Almost everywhere the Good Templars and Publicans have gone hand and glove together, and agreed most amicably as to whom they should elect to the Lice 'sing Bench, and the result has wo think proved satisfactory. The general public as a rule have taken no interest in the matter, behoving no doubt that the persons whom the two extremes would select by mutual agreement would of
necessity be men of moderate views, to whom no objection could be made. We have already published the names of those elected for ihe surrounding districts with the exception of Geraldine, where Missus Walker, Fish, Tripp, Maslin, and W. U. Slack have been elected uopposed. These gentlemen should make an excellent Licensing Committee. Owing to more than five members having been nominated for the Temuka district, an election will take place on next Friday, when wo hope the ratepayers will choose the best men. Advertisements appear in other columns calling upon ratepayers to vote for certain candidates, and to these we call the attention of our readers. Tlje ratepayers have got material to choose a good Com mittee from, and we sincerely trust they will elect independent men, whom no party can influence.
