. * , Census Returns.—The Registrar- G-eneral . has just completed the estimate of the population of the principal cities and boroughs as altered since last census by births, deaths, immigration, and emigration. The result is as follows, so far as the chief places go; Dunedin, 24,782; Wellington, 21,047; Auckland, 16,909; Christoh>roh, 15,476; Sydenham, 8689; Nelson, 6868; Oamaru, 5938; Timaru, 4080. arrest.—Constable Burke made a rather smart arrest yesterday. A young man "named, Charles Heatly stole a horsa belonging to one .Michael Riordon, from Kingsdown.and sold it to ope. Andrew Johnston, who is working on Mr Frews Farm for £4 and a watch worth £3. When arrested he had,the.watch and £3 18s in his possession. The constable found that he had changed a cheque drawn by Mr Frew in the bank, and,;he accordingly went to Mr Frew's place and found, trie .horse there. Through the activity of the constable their properties will be restored to both Riordon and Johnston. St Mary's Church, G-eraldine.—At a meeting of the Parishionars of the above church held last Thursday, it was resolved:— " That, as this meeting has determined to build a wooden church to seat 350 people, the Chairman be empowered to write to the architect, Mr Marley, and request him to forward an estimate of a church in vrood; the wood to be of the. best, quality, and. the foundation to be of concrete; also, that the architect be asked to send a. sketch of.-his proposed design." One member of the congre-, gabion subscribed £SOO, and many others promised liberal assistance towards the erection of a church. Licensing Committee—The nominations for the Licensing Committee took place last Saturday, but the Clerk of the Court sealed up the papers and declined giving us the names of those whe were nominated on the ground (.hat he dared not do so without authority from the Returning Officer. We have not, therefore, any official information as to who were nominated, except what we gather from repprts going about the town. According to popular reports Drs Hayes and Campbell, and Messrs A. Cox. junior, S. D. Barker, J. Talbot, Gk H. Thompson, J. Pateraon, W. Mur* ray, and J. Brown, have been nominated. For Timaru Dr Macintjre, and Mesßrs W. C. Beswick, J. C. McKerrow, E. Gk Kerr, and E. Gk Stericker have been nominated. Far the Levels District Messrs D. Anderson, A. Mee, and E. Acton have been nominatud. <

It appeared that on the 13th of October last the accident happened and was described by Devine as follows:—When I found! could get no farther I turned the horse to, go, backi and in doing so went over the cutting* The trap turned over twic?—the first time it rolled over I was under it, bu.t I got clear again. The horse broke the harness and- go' clear of the trap. The horse cut its knees. I considered it had depreciated the value ofthe horse- about £lO. The horse is still marked. The harness, was broken, it cost me £4, 17s to repair it. I paid £3 17s 6to repairthe cart. I was unable to work, myself for a., fortnight after, having been bruised on- the shoulder. My los9 of time I value at about, £5. I saw nothing to prevent any traffic on. the road ; there were no bars, chains or lights •- His Honor gave, judgment for the defendant with costs, on the ground that plaintiff had contributed to the accident by his own* negligence.
