LICENSING LAWS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see in yesterday’s issue of the Leader a report of a meeting at the Royal Hotel of Licensed Victuallers, and a deputa . tion of Good Templars, to see who they would conjointly nominate for the new Licensing Bench. The Licensed Victuallers seemed to have it all cut and dried, and to think that there would be no necessity for an election, but I hope that they will be mistaken. The names that I saw in the report may be all very well, but there are one or two that in my opinion would never do to get qn a Licensing Bench, as their views are altogether too bigoted. If moderate men are desired, nominate men that will look to the interests of the district, not to the four publicans, or to the Good Templars solely. It is rather amusing tq read the resolution moved by Mr Ollivier, and to see how the Good Templars have fallen in with the idea. That it be recommended to the new Licensing Bench that there are sufficient lincensed bouses in the township already, and that there is no necessity for increased accommodation. The Licensed Victuallers seemed to know what they were about, when they brought forward that resolution, inasmuch as the Good Templars are in duty bound t o oppose anything, and everything that tends to increase the sale of intoxicating drinks, and that they (the Licensed Victuallers), would be deprived to a certain extent of the trade which they now have. So you see that the above resolution answers both parties famously. By inserting the above, you will oblige. —I am, etc. Moderation. Temuka, Feb. 27th, 1882.
