The Government would, however, he added, intercede with the Russian authorities when a fitting occasion arose. Mr Gladstone’s motion for the adoption of cloture will be opposed by Sir Stafford Northcote, as leader of the Conservative party. Feb. 9. The first series of wool sales lor the present year will commence on the 28th inst. The arrivals to date amount to 120,000 bales. The total probable quantity to be offered during the series, including 10,000 bales held over from tiie November and December sales, is 310,000. * The quantity of new arrivals to be offered daring the series has been restricted by the Importers’’ Committee to 300,000 bales. In the House of Commcns a motion, introduced by Mr Patrick J. Smithe, demanding Home Rule lor Ireland, was rejected. Mr Gladstone stated that She was fully alive to the importance of local autonomy for that country, but the Governmenli were reluctantly compelled to postpone consideration of ’ the, question. There is no foundation for the report that the special correspondent of the London Times had been murdered by Arnauts in Albania. Capetown, Feb, 8. Intelligence, is to hand from the Transvaal to the effect, that an ariped; . force of Boers has crossed the boundary, defined by the Anglo-Boer Convention, into native territory, and attacked; the. chief Montsima. The natives, however, were in strong force, and repulsed the Boers. According to the latest accounts fighting still continues.
