The annual general meeting of the above Institute will be held next Tuesday, to receive the report and balance sheet fertile past "year. Obstructing the . Railway. A lad named John Sullivan, aged 12 years, was yesterday committed for trial. in ( Timaru for placing stones on the railway line. It appeared that on the 14th instant Sullivan,, with some other boys placed the stones on the line. Accident. —An accident occurred last Wednesday evening, by which a buggy belonging to Mr Pilbrow sustained some injury; The horse to which the buggy was attached was being taken out of Nicholas’s stables when it .shied to one side, striking the wheel L * ° of the vehicle against the side post. The shafts and bar of , the buggy were broken, bat no person was hurt.
R.M. Court.—At the above court , yesterday, before J. Mendelsen Esq., Timothy Sullivan was brought up on a charge of haying been drunk and disorderly on, the previous afternoon and fined os or 24., hours in durance vile. Peter Kennedy for a similar offence, who had frequently made the acquaintance of the Court before, was sentenced to 48 hours imprisonment. The Court then adjourned. Editorial Criticism.— The Wairarapa Star, after quoting some fearful gibberish which appeared in the leading columns of the New Zealand Times, says that evidently the money voted for the support of the Wellington Lunatic Asylum was not voted in vain- This is altogether too bad., We would have said that of a South Canterbury contemporary long ago, only that we did not like to be too personal.
Committal or the Member roe Wallace. —Judgment wag given in the Resident Magistrate's Court, Invercargill, yesterday, in the case against T. Daniel, Member for Wallace, who was charged with, aiding and abetting personation in tbe recent election. Three charges were preferred, and the Court held the evidence in each case was to wan'ant a committal of defendant to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, the amount in each case being defendant in £IOO, and two sureties in £SO. Cricket. —The cricket match between the All England Eleven and 22 of Timaru came to a close last Wednesday evening sooner than was expected. ‘ The English team scored 119 runs, that is eight runs more than their opponents with six wickets to spare and then withdrew from the contest. It was at first arranged that they should play until 2 o’clock on Thursday and proceed by the express train to Christchurch, hut they declined to continue the game, and left.Timaru by the first train on Thursday morning. A telegram from Christchurch states that owing to a heavy fall of vain, the match had to he postponed. Aquatic.—Robert Watson Boyd has, in answer to the proposition of the Australian rowing men, offered to go to Australia if anyone will find him the funds necessary for travelling expenses and stake money. Some people say Boyd is a better man than either Laycock or Rush, or any other rowing man among the Australians, and a match between him and the colonial scullers would be interesting enough in their way. It is, however, a great mistake to attempt, as do some Northern sporting men, to invest the mooted matches with an air of any importance. So long as Hanlan remains undefeated, and does not retire with his .well-earned title of champion sculler, trials between Home and colonial scullers can only possess secondary importance. A circumstance that will detract also from the importance of Boyd’s visit to Australia is—-hould it be made —that while he had the opportunity of arranging meetings with Hanlan, Ross, Trickett, and Laycock, he persistently declined reasonable terms offered him, and while professing to be willing to make matches with his challengers, always raised insurmountable difficulties. — Press.
