ROMAN CATHOLIC MEMBERS FOR ENGLISH CONSTITUENCIES.
The return of Mr Jerningham for
Berwick reminds us that, although the Homan Catholic Emancipation Bill was passed in 1829, very few members of that faith have succeeded in holding seats for English constituences. Among them, however, have been the Earl of Surrey (afterwards 13 th Duke of Norfolk), for Horsham and West Sussex, in 1829-41 ; Mr Edward Blount, for Steyning, from 1830 to 1832 ; Mr Charles Langdale, for Beverley, in 1832-34, and again for Knaresborough, from 1837 to 1841 ; Mr William Blount, for Totnes, by a double return in 1839-40; Mr Philip Howard, ofOorby, for Carlisle‘ from 1830 to 1847, and again from 1848 to 1852 ; Lord Arundel and Surrey (afterwards 14th Duke of Norfolk), for Arundel, in 1837-51 ; Sir John Simeon, for the Isle of Wight, from 1847 to 1851 ; Mr John Towncley, for Beverley, in 1841-52 ; Mr Thomas Stonor (afterwards Lord Camoys), for Oxford City, in 1332-33 ; Lord Edward Howard (now Lord Howard of Glossop), for Horsham and Arundel, from 1848 to 1868 ; Mr Charles Standish, for Wigan, in 1837-47 ; Sir William Massey Stanley, for Pontefract, from 1837 to 1841 ; the Hon. Edward R* Petre, for York, from 1832 to 1834; the Hon. Henry Stafford Jerningham, for Pontefract, in 1832-34 ; Sir R. Throckmorton, for Berkshire, in 1832-34 ; the Hon. John Stapleton, forj Berwick, in 1857-58, and from 1868 to 1874 ; and Mr Edward J. Hutchins, for Penryn and Falmouth, in 1840-41, and for Lymington, from 1850 to 1867.
