TEMUKA ROAD BOARD ELECTION.

TO THE EDITOR. . Sir, —We see by your paper of Tuesday, he 17th last, that Mr Buxton accused us of spreading a report that he*had resigned as a candidate for the vacant seats on the Temuka Read Loard in favor of Mr James Austin. Noiv Sir, we deny having spread such a report. What we said was, that Mr Austin had received a letter stating that Mr Buxton was willing to resign in Mr Austin’s favor, and to leave no doubt in she minds of the ratepayers about this we publish the letter received by Mr Austin from Mr Kennedy, Mr Buxton’s proposer. Should there be any misunderstanding in the matter it certainly lies between Mr Buxton and his proposer, Mr Kennedy.— We remain Sir, yours &c. James Blyth. David Henry. [Mr Kennedy’s letter to Mr Austin is as follows; ] “ Eangitata, January 5; ’B2. r Mr James Austin, Winchester. “ Dear Sib, —I was in Temuka on Tuesday last, and I thought to see you there concerning Road Board matters. You and Mr Buxton are both nominated to serve on the Board to represent Eangitata Districts. Some say that if two stand it will split the rotes, and neither of you get in. Mr Buxton gays he is willing to resign in your favor if ■ye think it better, or he is willing to see it out if we think it any benefit for the district. Please let me know what you think about the matter, and I will tell Mr Buxton, as he is willing to do anything for the best. Please reply. '• Yours faithfully, “ W. Kennedy >} —«. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I have seen two letters in your paper of different dates concerning the above election, and as my name is mixed up with it, with your permission I will state what I know about the matter. Air Burton told mein Temuka that some said if two stood for the Eangitata, it would split the. votes and neither wonid he returned. I said Mr Austin might resign in your favor, or you in his, and Mr Buxton said" he was willing to do what ever was best for the District, and I promised Mr Buxton to see Mr Austin and ask him if he would resign. Being unable to see Mr Austin I wrote to him and told him that Air Buxton was willing to resign in his favor or he was willing to see it out. Air Buxton did not use the word resign, but he said he was willing to do ■whatever was best for the district, which J thought amounted to the same thing. I saw Air Austin at Eangitata a few days after I wrote to him, and we talked the matter over. He said for his part he was wilting resign, but his supporters would not allow him. I then went down to Air Buxton, according to promise, and told nun that I could not get to Winchester to see Air Austin, but that I had wrote, to him, and since then I had seen Mr Austin at Eangitata, and that he (Mr Austin) was not going to resign, V(ell, Air Buxton said he was not going to resign either and that Air Page had been there and told him never to turn tail at the last, and that he was going to see it out now. Now, Air Editor, I will not trouble you any further for I thick I have said sufficient to explain my authority, and how X wrote to Mr Austin concerning the above election,, —I am, A/C., W. Kennedy. Eangitata Island, January 20th, 1882.
