Several hundred packages of Australian butter, which w,ere. brought in the Europa’s refrigerating chambers, were sold at auction today, and realised an average, of lid per lb. Telegrams have been received report* ing that an explosion of a serious nature has occurred onboard H.MiS. Triumph, the flagship of the Pacific Squadron, at Cbquiinbo, a port on the coast of Chili. Three seamen were killed by the disaster and seven seriously injured. Considerable damage was also done to the vessel.
New Zealand 5 per . cent 10-40 loan has advanced

Further intelligence is, to hand regarding the recent massacre of three French priests at Ghadaraes, on the Algerian frontier oL Tripoli. It has been conclusively proved that the Arabs who committed the murder were instigated by the Cadi of the. district, and it is expected that measures will shortly be taken by the French Government for the summary punishment of the offenders.

A train containing a number of Legislators returning from, Albany to this city came into, collision with another. The former caught fire, and nearly all the carriages were, destroyed. Twelve of the passengers were killed, and many seriously injured. Cairo, Jan. 16^
The Egyptian, Assembly o£ Notables, which opened its sittings last month, has passed resolutions, defining, its own powers, and virtually assuming, control of thy Government of the Kingdom. Cherif Pasha, President of the Opunc'lj of Ministers, has intimated his refusal to accept the decision, of the Notables.

The Argus today publishes a special telegram from London stating that a
company is being formed there for purpose of taldng over the business of Messrs Cunningham, and Royse, Stead and Co., of Christchurch. The capital ot the Company will be a million. Two fresh cases of smallpox of mild form are reported to have occurred at the Quarantine Siation. There are now nine persons suffering from the disease.
James Mace was arrested on Saturday night, and was brought up at the PoliceCourt today on a charge of gambling and haed L 23,
