CRICKET.

The English Cricketers played 22 of Camara last Tuesday, and won easily. The wicket was very dead, and neither scored well. The highest on the Oamaru side was 20 made by Hewat, and on the English side 40 made by Midwinter. At the close of the game the scores were, Oamaru 60 ; English Eleven 146. The English Eleven arrived by the first train at Tirnaru yesterday, where they were heartily received and driven t» the .cricket ground. The day was observed as a general holiday, all the shops in the town being closed agreeably to the Mayor’s proclamation. Play commenced at 11.30 a.m., but up to 1 o’clock the attendance was not so lar*e as might be expected. After that time, however, the began to increase, and, notwithstanding that the weather wore a threatening aspect there could not have been less than between 1200 and 1500 persons present, the Grand Stand being crowded. The English team won the toss .and elected to take the fiald. fihe bowling of Midwinter and Peate, and the fielding of the Englishmen was remarkable for their excellency, but the Tirnaru men made a good stand, and scored 111 before the last wicket fell at 3.30 p.m. The English team then went to the wickets, just as a strong gale rose, making it rather difficult to continue the game. Ulyett was caught out for 10 runs when our reporter left. Play will be continued until 2 pm. today, when the cricketers will proceed to Christchurch by the Express train.
