THE CATHOLIC CHURCH CLOCK.
TO THE EDITOR. Sib,— During my short stay here I Lave heard several, complaints re size and color of the dials of the Catholic Church clock. The diameter of each dial is 4ft Sin, and their heightfrom the ground 60ft, so that according to the greatest modern authority on matters relating to turret clocks, viz., Sir E Beckett Denison, they are three inches larger than usual. His formula is Ift for every 15ft of elevation. As to the color, a white ’ ground with black hands and figures has, after many experiments, been found to lie by far the best. In this special case, however, the turret being of such a white color, I, think a broad baud 1 of black paint outside the edge of the dials would have i:he effect of lessening the glare when the sun is shining on it. —I am, etc., U. D. [The suggestion contained in this letter with regard to painting a black band around the clock has already been carried out. Mr Surridge, of this town, has painted a black band around the dials, and the result is that it has considerably improved' the appearances of the clock. Ed T.L.J "
