ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Jan. 5. An extensive seizure of arms was made to-day by the police at Kilrush, in the County Clare, Ireland. The Daily News publishes a statement to the effect that the French Government repudiates the reported annexation ot Raiatea, one of the Society Island. Obituary —Ralph Bernal Osborne, a well-known" politician, aged 68, and Professor John William Draper, American scientist, aged 71. Jan. 6. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, remains at fi7s ; New Zealand ditto, at sils. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,890,00 quarters. Adelaide flour, ex store. 42s 6d. The tallow market is strong- Australian, best beef, has advanced, to 42s 6d, best mutton to 475. The total stock of tallow in Loudon on January Ist was 7200 casks. Another large Liberal,gathering took place last evening at Birmingham. Mr John Bright and Mr Chamberlain were present, and, in the course of thenspeeches they alluded to the intentions of Government during the approaching session of Parliament, and announced that after the question of the reform of the procedure of the House of Commons had bren settled, Bills for the reform of .the IJnghsh land laws, the assimilation of county to borough fj’anchise, and for other objects, would be introduced by Government.' Negotiations between the English and French Commissioners for the conclusion of the French Commercial Treaty have now been finally broken off, and Mr Cross, the British delegate, has returned to London, Cairo, Jan. 5. It is announced that Arabi Bey has been appointed Under Secretary for War in the Egyptian Ministry. Washington, Jan. 5. The case for the defence of the prisoner Guiteau h?is closed, and the trial now stands adjourned to Saturday next. AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne, J,an. 7. The passengers of the Garonne, to the number of 300, have been quarantined here. It is believed that a fresh case of smallpox has broken out, but the symptoms of the passenger who is sickening are considered doubtful. She has 43 passengers for New Zealand. Adelaide. Jan, 8. James Henry was again brought up • his morning charged with wounding WMillett, at Opunafci. He was committed for trial at the next sitting of the reme Court. Hokitika, Jan. 7. A young man named Thomas Kearns, in the employ of his uncle, John Holding, at the Arahura fell nongery, cut his throat at an, early hour this morning. Anderson, another workman in -the tanueiy, ocqupied the same hut as Kearns, The latter rose in the middle of the nigh*, entered a.neighboring hut, committed the act, staggered back, and dqll.on,his bunk. An,dorso,n at once ran for. assistance,, and-had Kearns removed to the. Hospital. The police found in the hut where the, deed : was, committed a looking-glass on.the bed, the floor and blankets saturated with blood, and two knives on the floor, the sharpest having evidently been used by Kearns. The looking-glass had been taken from the wall, hut otherwise nothing was disturbed in the hut. He has only been in the colony about six months. Lately he has been very despondent. Dr Janies considers the wound fatal, though Kearns is still alive. Reefton, Jan. 8.
Mr W, E. Rowe. geologist, lias reported on the Golden Fleece mine. His report materially affects the interests of the whole of the Murray Creek rained He says; “ The auriferous deposit traversing your lease, and, I believe, miles of adjacent country yet unexplored, is a true lode, rich in gold and composed entirely of quartz banded and tired with the slates and minerals of the country, banded in structure, solid and firm, almost vertical in position, persistent in character, and at the great depth yet acquired in your mine, 620 feet, is 5 feet thick, with a tendency to enlarge in dip and strike. It contains the ores, lead, silver, iron and antimony, as associated minerals. Geologically considered, it holds a favorable position. The excellence and importance of the line of reef to the district has not been locally apprehended.” Christchurch, Jan. 6. A man named Shakelton, riding to Leeston, suddenly fell from his horse on Wednesday and fractured his skull. Owing to the recent nor’-westers some was qpne l»y fires at Oxford. Large additions to the Lunatic Asylum are just finished and are about to be occupied. The new range of buildings, though not yet complete according to the original designs, are a fine pile, with a frontage of many hundred feet two storeys high, and built of brick and concrete. Jan. 7. Mr J. W. Tjeadwell, one of the candidates for Christchurch' South,'has laid a criminal information for liliel against the proprietors of the Telegraph newspaper. Ashburton, Jan. 6. Mr Joseph Ivess has lodged a petition against the return of Mr Wanson for the Wakanui seat in Parliament.
