MINING NEWS.

We gather the following items of mining news from our exchanges ;• - The Homeward Bound Company, Arrow, sent down a cake of 23Tjozs a few days ago, the result of a 521-ton crushing. Splendid stone has now been struck by this Company, and the next cake is expected to show an encouragingly healthy and hopeful state of affairs.

We have been informed 'that the machinery at the Waipori antimony mine has been erected, and that the water has been pumped out of the shaft. The manager intends giving employment to a number of hands after the expiration of the holidays. Several miners formerly employed at Waitahuna have been eu • gaged, and will commence work at an

early date. We are pleased to hear that. Mr Robert Grieve, of Blue intends prospecting the old Gabriel’s reef, Otago. Many experienced miners believe that there is a good reef near the abandoned workings, and that it was merely a series of leaders that were worked by the Company. We wish Mr Grieve every success, and regret that there are not more gentlemen in the district possessed of his good old Victorian pluck find enterprising mining spiric. The .Humphrey’s Gully Water-race and Gold-tnining Company (West Coast) is likely to turn out very successful. The directors have only power to allot 20,000 shares, but applications for 37,340 have already been received. Out of the 20,000 shares 5275 have been allotted to Dunedin, 5000 to Auckland, 2000 to Christchurch, and 7725 to Hokitika. News from the Upper Shotover reefs aye reassuring. The Mount Aurmn Co. a,re busy crushing some rich stone ; and Mr Evan brought down on Saturday a cake of 3760 z of gold, crashed from the

same number of tons of stone taken from the north lode of the Ph«»nix claim. The lode from which the stone was taken varies from one to three feet thick, but two-thirds of it is said to be casing of little value.
