Go from Home to Learn News, — Another striking instance of • the truth of the old adage that one goes from home to learn news is afforded by a Sydney paper of arpcent date, which says :—" The sulphur deposits at Rotorua (N.Z.), much resorted to by invalids, haye caught fire.. The flaming snlplW poured down from the upper terrace like molten lava. The sight is described as ' grand and awful.' An Enebgetic Insurance Awent. —The Australian life-assurance man (says Mgles) not m.uch behind his, American congener. A manager of ( one of the Mutuals (which are supposed tp. be especially audacious, -was walking along Cb.anc6.ry Lane in the rain the other day, when a stranger from the country, apparently, addressed., him* asking him the way tojfche office of a well known firm ,of solicitors and the following ensued : —" The Manager—' lam passing the door, and will show you the way. (Interrogatively) —G«ing to law, eh ?' The Litigant —' I am.' Manager—' Dear me! Going to a lawyer's office. And may I ask —is your life insured?' Litigant —'It iEj not.'" Pointing out in vivid colours, the uncertainty of the law—perhaps,, an. adverse. verdict and a widow —he so impressed his acquaintance of the moment that they, turned into a lawstationer's office, a premium was 'paid, an interim receipt issued (subject to medical examination), and the ardent litigant approached his lawyer with the same feeling of safety as is enjoyed by a well-covered life in a storm at sea.

Set on Fibb ay a Spabk Fbom an Engine.—As the- express train was coming up towards the Opihi railway bridge yesterday af£er,noon, the fence along the line was qn fire, and several men were emplpyed in putting it out. We have not heard what had caused the fire, but it was the general opinion ampngst those on the train, that it had its origin in a spark from a passing railway engine.. A. great many fires have been occasioned by the same cause lately, and it would be well that the railway authorities should exercise jnoije, caution with regard to the matter. Some twp or, three years ago a large plantation of trees., neap Judge Ward's house, was burned from a passing engine and it was wjth great, difficulty that the house and much .property were. saved. Atthe inquest held. on that fire it transpired that some covering which goes on the funnel of the engines had not been put on. It was also stated that tha . Americans had patented a covering which would prevent sparks from escaping. We think it ia high time that proper steps, were taken to prevent aparks from engine .setting fire tp the properties through which they pass.
