CALEDONIAN SPORTS, TIMARU.

President—Mr D. Maclean. Vice-Pre - sidents Messrs J.O. McKerrow nnd James King., Directors—Messrs J. Bruce, J. Meikle, R. Stewart, T,. R. Jones. G. H. Wildie, JohD Davidson, Thomas O'Driscoll, Captain Mills, and Dr Macdonald. Hon. Treasurer Mr David Stewart. Secretary—Mr W; E. Whitcombe. New Year's Day having, fallen on. a Sunday, yesterday. (Monday.) was observed as a general holiday in South Canterbury. The,, principal., attraction was the Sputb Canterbury Caledonian sports, which, were held in Green's Paddock, Timaru. These sports have always been the moss popular ones held in the district, and this year proved no exception to the general rule. The trains from the different districts were that from this town, being particularly, well patronised by jolly spirits, whose singing contributed not a little to the enjoyment; of those who travelled by rail. At halfpast, ten o'clock the members of the Caledonian Society left the Grosvenor Hotel, headed by three High'and Pipers (playing appropriate, music), and the Timaru Artillery Band, and, marched to the ground., on. which, the. sports were held. The arrangements made by the Csmmittee . were really excellent every detail having been attended to with the utmost care. The grounds was well adapted for the sports, and the space set apart for the running, etc., was roped in, so that the competitors had no reason,to complain of being jostled by a crowd. A grand stand was also erected, from which there was an excellent view of the various events, and everything was so well arranged, that, to find fault was next to an impossibility. The weather was all that could be desired, the heat being tampered by a gentle breeze. The attendance was larger, much larger than on previous years, there being betweon 4,000. and 5,,C3Q, people on the, ground. The pro gramme, was an unusually heavy one, there, being .about 31, events, to be competed for, and the prizes offered were muchbetter than, they have ever been before. This.attracted a large number of competitors, and.excited a.keeni nterest in the sports and on the whole the Committee may be wel 1 congratulated on the result

of their efforts to provide means of re« creation for the public. There were several refreshment booths on theground, but though drink was to be had ad libitum the absence of drunkenness, was remarkable.
