The athletic sports held afc Ar.owhenua.. yesterday passed off very successfully.. The weather was all that could be : desired, a strong breeze- counteracting, the effects; of the heat of an, unclouded sun, and making, the day very pleasant fpr- the; sports. The. attendance was not owing, no doubt, to the people having had. enough of, holidays. Had the sports been, held on Tuesday, when all tb® places, of business in this town and in Timaru were shut,, there is no doubt that the attendance would have been much,larger.. Still,, aa it was, there was a fair sprinkling; cf. people on the ground, some of them having come, in traps from Timaru, and Temuka. The. number of competitors for the various-, cyents exceeded anticipation, comprising; some of the best atheletes in South, Can-, terbury, and on the whole the committee , had good reason to congratulate thera-. selves on the success of their, efforts.. The sports were held in the paddock ad--joining the Arowhenua Hotel which supplied the place of a booth, and was well patronised, Mr Leonard} Touu i, the genial host doing-all in liis* power to atattend to the wants of his guests. Still, there was a complete absence of drunkenness and the utmost good order prevailed throughout* Ip,the absence of,Mr W.
