THE BITER BIT.
The Ashhurton Mail Bays : •'An instance in which a practical joker, residing in Tinwald, had the tables turned on him has come to our knowledge. Takin? advantage of the time-honored custom of sending Christmas presents, for the perpetration of a joke on an acquaintance in Ashhurton, he obtained a rabbit skin from a recendy-niyed animal and proceeded to wrap the same up in brown paper, addressed and forwarded it to the intended victim " with compliments," Unknown to him, however, in tying up the bogus grift a signet ring, of massive gold, and 'vith a stone in the centre, slipped off his finsrer and was tied up in the parcel, and with the skin came into the possession of the gentleman to whom the parcel was addressed, and is now held by him till the would-be joker comes for. ward to claim his lost property. The rr g does not give any clue to who the sender is, hut he will- doubtless quickly make himself known under the circumstances. We should imagine in the future that " rabbit skins " will prove a dangerous topic of conversation to introduce in his presence.
