j Wesleyan Church Services.- The list j of to-morrow’s services to be held within the j circuit appears elsewhere. | Bank Holidays —The Bank of New Zeai land will be closed on Monday and Tuesday | next for the Christmas Holidays, j Caledonian Sports. —We would draw I onr readers’ attention to an important alteration in the advertisement in another column in reference to the Caledonian Sports to be held in Timaru on January 2nd. Telegraph Office. —On Boxing Day and January 2nd the telegraph offices throughout the Colony will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 7,30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Ratepayers’ Meeting at Mount Peel. —The annual meeting of tl?e ratepayers in the Mount Peel Road District will be held in the office of the Board, Peel Forest, on Monday 2nd January next. The Clock.—We are informed that Mr Adamson, of Christchurch, will shortly be passing through Temuka, when he wdl put the works of ths clock in the tower of the Roman Catholic church in proper order.

Oddfellows’Sports. —We would remind intending competitors for the various events to come off on Boxing Day that entries close to-day for Nos. 1, 8. 11, 13, and 16, before twelve o’clock noon. The handicaps will be declared, and posted on Mr G. J. Mason’s board at 4 p.m. Boxing Day. —Monday nest being timehonored Boxing Day, will be observed in Temuka as a strict holiday. The principal event will be the Oddfellows’ Sports, which will take place in the Park. The programme appears in our advertising columns. Should the weather prove favorable, a large gathering may be expected.

Election or Egad Board Members.— A notification appears in our advertising columns to the effect that nomination of candidates for two annual vacancies on the Mount Peel Koad Board must be forwarded to Mr E. Irvine, Returning officer, at the Eoad Board Office, Peel Forest, before noon on Monday, 2nd January next. The electim will take place on Friday, 6th January, AaowaiSPA Sports. —• We are glad to observe that our friends on the other side of the river are going to enjoy themselves during Christmas week, and have prepared a very attractive programme of sports to come off near the Arowhenua Hotel on Wednesday next, the 28th instant. On reference to it in our advertising columns, we do not think our sporting friends will have occasion to cavil at the prizes offered.

Temuka Eoad Board Election.— The annual election of two members to ‘serve on the Temuka Eoad Board in the places of Messrs J. Talbot and R. A. Barker (who retire by effluxion of time), and also for the election of a member in the stead of Mr A. Empson (resigned) will take plaee on Tuesday, 10th January next. The nomination of candidates for the vacant seats must be forwarded to Mr W. Wills, Returning Office!’ on or before noon of Tuesday, January and.

Larceny From the Person.—A Native named Charles Kotepahi was charged with stealing a watch from the person of William, Cox, of Temuka, and remanded so that Cox might be communicated with. Accident.—A carter named Henry Macdonald has suffered severe injuries to Ins spine through falling off a dray near Peel Forest. He was conveyed to the Timaru Hospital last Tluirsdav. Wife Desertion. Alfred Wadsworth, formerly of the Orari Hotel, was brought before the Timaru Court last Thursday, on a eharge of wife cb-sertion, and remanded to Dunedin, where the warrant was issued. Death from Onow.vt.va.—A little girl named Jessie Fergusson, daughter of Mr Robert Fergueson. of Kurow, whilst playing on the bank of the Waitangi last, Tuesday, fell-in, and was not rescued until she was quite dead. Personae.—We have been informed that an mtei change of sit uations will shortly taUplace in the staff of the Bank of New Zealand here andat Oiimaru. Mr Diddams will be re-transferred to Temuka,and Mr Wov.vouth will resume his old position at Oaraaru. An Extraordinary Occurrence. —The Timaru Herald of yesterday says that u a little girl named Jessie Fergusson was drowned in the Waitangi river while playing on the bank with her brother and sister!” Who ever heard of anybody being drowned in a rive l " whilst playing on its bank ? Is it possible that an Irishman has been able to smuggle himself into the office of the Timaru Herald ? Surely the organ of the “ men of culture ” ought to write better English than this.

Signs of the Season.— Shortly after S o’clock on Thursday evening last, as Mr S. Norton was returning to his home, after disposing of a quantity of meat in Temuka—and when near Mr Earner's residence—some larrikins, on their kind of pleasure bent, surrounded his cart. Mr Norton endeavored to free himself from them, and whilst turning quickly round the cart capsized, throwing its occupant and contents out on the. road. Fortunately no damage was done beyond the meat being impregnated with a little Colonial dust.

Shocking- Fatal Accident. —On Wednesday evening last a fatal accident occurred at Lambton Quay. A loud esplosion was heard, and it was discovered that some blu fire composition, in the, roar of- Messrs Barraud and Sons’'chemists! shop had exploded. Mrs Anthony, wife of the manager of the business, who was in the yard with a little boy three years old, received terrible injuries, both hands being blown off close below the elbow, her right leg broken below the knee, her jaw broken, besides her face being fearfully cut and gashed. She was taken in side, and medical aid obtained. The several injuries were attended to, after which the t oor sufferer was taken to the Hospital, but no hopes are entertained of her recovery. The child fortunately escaced with a tew slight bruises. Mr Anthony and others in the shop are at a loss to account for the explosion. The had been making blue fire composition during the forenoon, and found it to be dangerous, as some of it exploded and singed the hair of an assistant. About half a pound of the mixture was left in a mortar, and Mrs Anthony had suggested that the best means of getting rid of it would be tc, wash out the mortar with water, and it is thought by many that she was in the act of doing this when the explosion occurred. The report was heard half-a-mile away. The mortar was shat tered to atoms, fragments being found at a distance of 100 yards. The affair has caused great excitement in town, and great sympathy is expressed for Mr Anthony. Mrs Anthony has since died.

Tenders for cutting, making, carting, and stacking about 10 acres hay, must be sent in to Mr E. A. Barker, Orari, to-day. Tenders for cutting, binding, and stocking 80 acres rye-grass for Messrs Maclean and Stewart, Timaru, close to-day at 11 a.m. All claims in the assigned estate of Mr A, St. G. Hamersley must be forwarded to Mr W. Davidson, trustee, on or before 2nd Jan. next.

Mr A. Wilson, late proprietor of this journal, announces that all accounts due to him must be paid to Mr J. Heap on or before i 2nd January next.

The trustees in the esiate of Mr Boyd Thomson intimate that all debts due to the estate must be paid on or before sth January j next, or they will be.sued for.
