THE SULTAN.
Tho Sultan of Turkey wants to pet up a revival of Mahometanism. The Grand Scherif of Mecca backs him up by urging all the chiefs of the Mahometan priesthood to use their utmost exertions in increasing he number of pilgrims this year. The object is to work upon the religious feelings of the pilgrims and through them upon their frends and fellow-believers throughout all the Mahometan cnmnnnities. It is bdleved that the Grand Scherif will this year address solemn exhortations to the pilgrims when they are assembled at the tomb of the Prophet, and will endeavor to impress on them the doctrine that all true believers, including those governed by independent Mahometan Princes, recognise the Sultan of Constantinople as the spiritual head of the entire Mussulman world. This doctrine the pilgrims will be exhorted to impress upon their fellow-believers, in whatever part of Africa or Asia they may dwell. It is another proof of the growth of Pan-lslamitc ideas that the Grand Scherif has ordered that, in all the mosques within his territory, the Turkish Sultan’s name shall always be mentioned before his own in the chutba or prayer for the sovereign.
