In the House of Commons to- clay, a question was put to the Prenrier with regard to fcho position of affairs in Eastern Europe, and a long and animated debate ensued with regard to. the AngloTurkish Convention entered into during their administration, in the terms of which the Island of Cyprns was placed tinder British rule, as a guarantee for certain reforms to be carried out by the Porte in Asiatic Turkey. In the course of the debate the- Radical members strongly urged that the convention should be cancelled The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, in reply,, renewed and justified: the attack lie had formerly made upon the Conservative policy, but he stated that it was qu'te impossible for the British Government to restore Cyprus to Turkish misrule.
