ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, June 25
In the House of Commons to- clay, a question was put to the Prenrier with regard to fcho position of affairs in Eastern Europe, and a long and animated debate ensued with regard to. the AngloTurkish Convention entered into during their administration, in the terms of which the Island of Cyprns was placed tinder British rule, as a guarantee for certain reforms to be carried out by the Porte in Asiatic Turkey. In the course of the debate the- Radical members strongly urged that the convention should be cancelled The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone, in reply,, renewed and justified: the attack lie had formerly made upon the Conservative policy, but he stated that it was qu'te impossible for the British Government to restore Cyprus to Turkish misrule. Ho added, however, that Lord Dufl'erin, at present British Ambassador to the Porte, had been instructed to endeavor, as far as possible,, to expedite reform in Armenia. Pakis. June 2-t. Intelligence has- been received of a terrible occurrence in Algeria. A large body of native Arabs made an overwhelming attack on the Spanish colonist residents at Saida. The latter could offer but a feeble resistance,, and where completely overcome, over 100 being killed and 40 taken prisoners, and the majority being■ serfoit e ly wounded. —»- AUSTRALIAN. Melbourne, June 25. Princes Albert Victor and George, of Wales, arrived here to-day overland from Adelaide. Their Royal Highnesses proceeded direct on board the Bacchante on which vessel they will remain during their stay hers. Sydney, June 25. A fresh case ot smallpox is reported this morning, It has occurred at a house on Surrey Hills, in which the carpenter who died on the 17th inst.. was attacked, and which has been kept in quarantine, The carpenter's child, who is confined With thirteen others in this home, has now sickened with the disease.
