The Temuka Leader SATURDAY, JUNE 4, 1881. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Temuka Hoad Board. —The monthly meeting of this Board will be, held on Tuesday next, at the usual hour; Wesleyan Church. —The list of services to be held in the district to-morrow will he found in our advertising columns. The N.Z. Protestant.— -We are in receipt of the current monthly number of this journal. Mr Uprichard is the local agent for the sale of th» same. A Savage Assault. —Yesterday morning one of our local tradesmen in the township was savagely set upon in his office by a well-known eccentric individual who bit his left hand most severely. The Electric Light. —We understand that a number of gentlemen in Christchurch are now in communication with the patentee of the * Edison electric light with view to the formation of a Company to supply Chvischurch and New Zealand generally with tlleolectric light. A Correction. —ln the Ikader of our last issue, through an inadvertence, the word “pemesis ” was printed instead of the word “ Nemesis." We note the correction, although unnecessary* as our readers, on perusing the same could easily see the true intent of the word. Temuka Brass Band. On Friday next the members of the Temuka Brass Band intend giving a grand concert of voaal and instrumental music in the Volunteer Hall in aid of their funds. No effort is being spared to render the entertainment a brilliant success. Acknowledgment.— We are in receipt of a pamphlet by Mr H J. Sealey, entitled “Are we to stay here," being a paper on the New Zealand Public Works Policy of 1870, considered especially with reference to the question, of, the settlement of the Crown Lands and the incidence of taxation. We shall refer to this inlet. . esting work in another issue. Journalistic. —We are in receipt of the first number of The Canterbury Standard, a weekly paper, issued from the office of the Telegraph, Chrischurch. It is carefully c mpiled, giving a vast amount of useful information for the unprecedentedly low figure of threepence. We heartily wish Mr Cagill, the proprietor, success in his new and plucky undertaking. Board or Education.— During the business transacted a the meeting of the Board, oo Wednesday hst, the resignation , of Mr Postlethwaite w.a» accepted. Proposed by Mr Wakefield, seconded by Mr Howell, and carried—“ That the sum of £lO deducted from the incidental allowance of the Opihi School Committee as '"the local subsidy towards the salary of a certificated teacher* not having been rei quiced for that purpose,, though, properly exacted at the time in accordance with the rule laid: down by the Board, that amount be repaid the Opihi School Committee," The Secretary stated that in accordance with a resolution passed some two months ago, the architect had prepared plans for new school buildings at Temuka. The plans were now submitted to the Board. The Committee, of the. Geraldine Flat School wrote requesting that the Board declare their school a district school-; also asking for certain fencing to.be done. It was, resolved that the requests be granted.

Bane Holiday. —The Bank of New Zealand will be closed on Monday next, June 6thj being Whit-Monday, in terms of the Bank; Holidays’Act. Football.—At Winchester, to-day, a scratch match; will be playedon the cricket ground between Gferaldino-and the local teams. Sides will be chosen on the ground. Play will commence- at 2' p.ra.. More Light. —No doubt the residents of Temuka, especially those who have- to travel by-rail on* a; dark, night,, are gratefed. for the small mercies received fromthe;hands of the Temuka Road Board in the- shape of two lamps at the eastern corners of the two streets leading to and from the railway station. But, like Oliver Twist, they require, more and we would suggest to the Board the advisability of erecting.two or three lanps.in< the. main street, which would : prove a-great boon to those who have to frequent it. Arowhenua Cemetery. Board. —The usual monthly meeting was held in the Star Hotel, on Thursday evening the 2nd June. Members present were Messrs Mendelson (Chairman) Quinn and Gray, The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Proposed by Mr Gray seconded by Mr Quinn and carried—- ||“ The Secretary instruct the caretaker to form the path by the creek as laid off last year, and turf all unturfed graves as time will admit.” Mr Gray moved Mr Quinn seconded and it was adopted—“ That two i members of the Board visit the Cemetery monthly and that Messrs Mendelson and Brown bo appointed as visitors for the current month.” The meeting then adjourned. A Pleasant Gathering.— On Tuesday evening last, the friends of Mr and Mrs Plirk assembled at their residence at Milford, to celebrate the coming of age of their son; About? thirty-five ladies and gentlemen sat down to an excellent dinner provided by their generous host and hostess. Mr J Woodhead occupied the chair, and Mic G. J. Mason the vice-chair. After justice had been done to the goo i things provided, the chairman proposed the health of. Mr Park junr, accompanying the same with some well chosen and. eulogistic leraarks. The toast was received with musical honors. Mr Park junr.i briefly responded, and returned thanks for the warm-hearted wishes bestowed r on him. The vice chairman in a very flattering speech proposed the health offthe host and hostess. Musical; honors- were accorded to this toast also. “ The ladies” was proposed by the Chairman and reponded to by Mr Yelvin. The room being cleared, for a company thoroughly enjoyed till, daylight the following morning, when*as, thebest of friends must part, the assembly broke up, the guests wishing Mr and’ Mrs Park and Mb- Park jun. long life and prosperity. T.M.I.A.—An ordinary meeting of the Temuka Mutual Improvement Association was held in the Good Templars’ Hall on Thursday evening last, Dr Hayes in the chair. The minutes of the psevious meet" ing were read and confirmed. The revised rules were then severally discussed, at conclusion of which Mr J, Brown proposed, and the Rev. Mr Fee seconded—- “ That the revised rules be adopted as read.” As an amendment, it was proposed by Mr Mackay—“ That the adoption of the rules be deferred till next meeting.” Owing to there being no seconder to the amendment it was not put to the meeting, and on the resolution being read it was carried. Dr Gumming was elected a member of the Association. Proposed by Mr Fee, seconded by Mr Pinckney, and carried—“ That owing to the lateness of the hour th" readings and recitations be postponed till this day fortnight, A cordial vote of thanks to the chairman terminated; the proceedings. The subject for Thursday evening will be “Is free Education necessary in New Zealand to be opened in the affirmative by Mr J. Brown, and in the negative by Mr Bolton.
