PROPOSED EXPORT OF FISH.
Tho recent importation of a consignment of English frozen fish into Australia has given rise to a good deal of speculation, not as to whether such importations can be continued, but as to whether New Zealand could not profitably turn the experiment to account by exporting fresh fish to England and Australia. It ii urged with much apparent reason that the swarms of excellent fish which abound upon our coasts, would yield an inexhaustible supply, and that the finny cargoes could be shipped at a merely nominal cost, thus providing a new industry that would support a large section of the working classes and at the same time yield a handsome return on capital invested in the trade- While expressing our belief that the freezing process will prove capable of being utilised in this manner we are inclined to doubt whether our New Zealand fish deficient as most of the ordinary varieties are in flavor as compared with the best known English kinds would find a ready sale in the home market. In a few years time when we have acclimatised the salmon and other princely members of the deep, possibly the idea might be more feasible.
