Recent news from Ireland,states that a want of harmony is apparent in the working of the Land League, and dis-
cord has shown itself in open dissensions between several of the leading members. Notwithstanding the arrests which have been made in Ireland under the Coercion Act, the power o£ fhe Land League continues to be felt throughout the poiiiijtfy. Meetings under its auspices are still held in agitation of the land question, apd it is rumored that the Government in consequence intend to instruct the Viceroy to prohibit all meetings of the League in Ireland.
The Turco-Greek convention re the settlement of the frontier difficulty having been concluded, the Right Hon. Mr Goschen, Ambassador Extraordinary to the Porte, is now returning to London. His successor, Earl Dufferin, *t. ‘ > < -‘s .• i ' \ ’ • leave Bt, Petersburg shortly for Constantinople.
Consols remain at 102| ; the bank rate of discount unchanged at 2-| per cent, and the market rate at. I|. The markets for Australian and New Zealand breadstuff's and Aqsfyalian tallow show no change fn prices. Selected transparent kauri gum is quoted at LIO 5b per cwt., an advance of LI, New Zealand securities are unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ex has advanced to 495, anl New Zealand fo 455; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, remains at 33s 6d. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,240,000 quarters.
At the wool auction to-day 9000 bales were offered. The tone of the sale was strong. Inferior 1 and faulty wools of all kinds were less depressed, and there was more equiry for cross-bred and scoured sorts.
AUSTRALIAN. ’ Sypnev, May 2fJ, Ip jhe action for libel brought by Mr Gipps, hydraulic engineer, against Mr Withers. M.L.A. the latter pleaded the ’privilege of Parliament the alleged ' libel haying been written in the pocket book of Mr Withers, k.L.A. within ! the precincts of the Assembly. The plaintiff was non-suited. An enthusiastic meethg was held at; jX'S' tTalY last evening, at which it was resolved to raise the whole of the amount ol the Bulletin’s costs in the recent libel action. A large amount has already been subscribed by all classes of the community.
