Large Lime Kilns are now in course of erection close to the property. The particulars of the property are as follows ; It is freehold, of 20 acres in extent, the property of Mr George Meredith. In the land two shafts have been sunk. The main, or working shaft is Oft by sft wide, and is 32ft deep, from which coal has been raised from a seam 2ft thick. The shaft is timbered from the surface. The other shaft referred to (half a chain from the main shaft) is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ft deep, and is well timbered, and has been sunk through two seams of coal of sft and 4ft respectively on to a 2ft 6in seam. Fire clay is found in large quantities and is pronounced by competent authority to be eminently adapted for p:. eery and sanitary pipes, gas retorts, fire-bricks. &c. The coal is easily obtained, and is ,of the finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for th,? production of gas and for steam purposes has been proved by reliable tests, As this coal is admitted to bo areally good coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant supplies in depots, so that the public can always get what they may raquive. Building stone is found on the property, and marble within a few chains, of a very superior description, also abounds. The Building Stone is a fine white stone, easily worked, and does not disintegrate from exposuie to weather, some quantity of this stone having been used in the building of the, Christchurch Cathedral. A large quantity of good Timber is in close proximity to the ground and easily obtainable. The Coal has been tried for steam purposes and found to answer admirably, as thb following testimonials show.:— Timaru, Nov. 29th, 1880. To Mr George Meredith. Kakahu, Siß, —I have used the Coal supplied by you . from the Kakahu Mine (about five tons) in my Mill at Timaru and found it most satisfactory, and consider the Coal well adapted to be used for steam purposes. (Signed) John G. Allen, Mr George Meredith, Kakahu. Sir. —I have used the Coal supplied by you from your Cot I Mine, Kakahu, for my steam engine, mixing it with Newcastle Coal (half and half). I found it answer admirably, much better than Newcastle Coal alone. I consider the Kakahu Coal well adapted to be used for steam purposes. 1 am, &c., ; Francis Franks.
